Welcome to the Hearing
Resource Centre...
The Secondary Hearing Resource
Centre (HRC) caters for the needs of local pupils with Statements of
Special Educational Need who have a severe to profound hearing loss
and require a level of specialist teaching which is greater than
would normally be available in a mainstream secondary school.
The HRC uses
the Natural Aural approach where hearing-impaired pupils’
communication skills are developed through speaking and listening.
The central
aims of the Centre are
·
promoting and
supporting hearing-impaired pupils’ full access to, and inclusion
in, both the curriculum and the life of the school
·
developing
hearing-impaired pupils’ independence in school with regard to
managing their hearing loss and being members of the community
·
preparing
hearing-impaired pupils for leaving Shirley High School and moving
on to further education or employment.
Who works in
the HRC?
There are 4
members of staff who work in the HRC:
·
a full-time Teacher of
the Deaf
·
a part-time Teacher of
the Deaf
·
two Specialist Support
Assistants: one full-time and one part-time.
The Centre is
part of the centrally-funded Communication Support Service.
The Teacher in
Charge of the HRC is responsible to the Head of Service, Mrs
Jennifer Kidd, and works closely with a member of the Senior
Leadership Group at Shirley High School.
The
Communication Support Service also includes the Primary Hearing
Centre at Kingsley Primary School, the Speech and Language Centre at
Applegarth Primary School and the peripatetic teams for the
hearing-impaired and visually-impaired.
For more
information about the Communication Support Service please contact
Mrs J Kidd on 020 8683 4849.
The telephone
number for the HRC is 0208 656 2987.
Quotations
from the school’s Ofsted Inspection Report, May 2006
‘Pupils with
learning difficulties and disabilities, including those with hearing
impairment, achieve as well as other pupils.’
‘Support for
the pupils in the HRC is good, and they are appropriately included
in the life of the school as a whole.’
